There’s an old adage many people may be familiar with that says “what you put in is what you get out.” But what does that really mean? For most, it means that the return on an effort towards a goal is based upon how much effort is committed to that particular action in the first place.
With it being the beginning of a new year, many people are optimistic in setting a goal that helps them feel better, healthier and maybe even be more productive. Does that sound familiar to you? Does it sound a little daunting? Forget the complicated New Year’s Resolutions. This year, take simple steps toward a healthier you!
Research shows that simple and attainable goals can dramatically increase your chances of success. Simplify your goals in a way that creates excitement, desire and optimism. If you feel that a goal is achievable, you will be more optimistic about putting in the time and commitment needed to achieve it. Goals that are unrealistic or too big can seem daunting and thus more difficult for someone to feel excited about. While it is perfectly acceptable to have big goals in mind (and you should!), the plan to get there should be simplified in a way that encourages positive behavior. Let’s read that again….the plan to get there should be simplified in a way that encourages positive behavior. The key word in that statement is PLAN. Ben Franklin once said “failure to plan is planning to fail.”
The second step is to put that plan on paper. Just thinking about how you want to do something is a start, but putting a plan on paper can help solidify that commitment. Whether it be a notebook, post it note or lipstick on the bathroom mirror, just get that plan down!
Here’s an example of crafting a plan. Maybe you have a desire to feel better. Great. Let’s simplify that down. Choose an area(s) or action(s) that you think will help you to feel better on a daily basis. Are you good at drinking water? No? Do you take daily supplements? No? Well, there’s a great place to start! Let’s put a plan in place for feeling better! Yes, we are making a plan to drink water and take supplements. It might sound silly and simple but it’s a great place to start! Here are some reasons why drinking more water is a great goal.
First, let’s identify how much water. It is generally recommended by health officials to drink at least 2 liters or half a gallon of water each day. So how do we plan to do that? That’s the second step, when to drink the water. There are many ways to fit in drinking water during the day. Fortunately, it’s an easy thing to do.
One plan could be: drink water as soon as you wake up. If you were fortunate enough to get 6-8 hours of sleep (or more!) it is important to re-hydrate upon waking. An action could be to drink sixteen ounces or a large drinking glass as soon as you get out of bed. Make it part of your morning routine. This simple action will have great benefits to your health and will quickly help you to start feeling better. A second action could be to identify a time in the afternoon to drink another 16 ounces or more. Many folks hit a slump after lunch time.
